SMAA’s Agewell Center has been asked to take part in a Tai Chi for Balance Pilot Program in York and Cumberland counties.
The Tai Chi for Better Balance curriculum is part of a 6 month pilot program led by the Innovation Labs at Aetna, a national health insurer helping its members live vibrant, connected lives in their communities.
The program includes 8 Tai Chi forms that emphasize weight shifting, postural alignment, and coordinated movements; including general warm-up activities, core Tai Chi movements, and cool-down exercise, with musical accompaniment.
Geared towards people aged 65 and older, Tai Chi for Better Balance helps people to:
Ø Improve balance, strength, and physical performance
Ø Improve confidence in conducting daily activities
Ø Improve social and mental well-being
Ø Reduce falls
Ø Maintain independence and improve quality of life
Beginning November 12th & 14th, a trained volunteer will lead classes here at the J. Richard Martin Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 – 10 a.m. for 24 weeks. This class will meet in the Auditorium (front of building, top floor).
Attendance is FREE and you can begin by merely dropping-in, but we ask that you commit to the entire 24 week period.
